Glen Johnson said on Sky Sports News (2:08pm, December 12, 2020) that Liverpool will do all they can to keep Georginio Wijnaldum at the club.
Wijnaldum is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, and no new deal is in place.
The 30-year-old Netherlands international midfielder has been on the books of the Merseyside club since the summer of 2016 when he joined from Newcastle United for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £25 million and has established himself as an important player in the team.
The Dutch midfielder has made 10 starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League so far this season, while during the 2019-20 campaign, he made 35 starts and two substitute appearances in the league, according to WhoScored.
Former Liverpool right-back Johnson, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, thinks that Wijnaldum would be hard to replace, and believes that the Reds will do their utmost to keep him at the club.
Johnson said about Wijnaldum on Sky Sports News (2:08pm, December 12, 2020): “I think the club made it clear they want him to (sign a new contract), I think it’s about what he wants to do.”
The Englishman added: “These players are hard to replace.”
The Sky Sports pundit continued: “As a football club, I think they would do all they can to keep hold of him.”
Staying at Liverpool
Wijnaldum is at his peak now, and although the midfielder would not have any resale value, given his importance to manager Jurgen Klopp’s team, the defending Premier League champions should try to keep hold of him beyond next summer.
