Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing Newcastle United’s January transfer plans and Moussa Diaby.

The Magpies had Diaby down as one of their top targets in the summer transfer window, but the French winger proved to be an unattainable target due to the fact he fancied giving it one more season at Bayer Leverkusen to try and usurp Bayern Munich.

However, sadly, things haven’t quite gone to play for Bayer this season.

They endured their worst start in the league for years, and while things have improved lately, they’re well and truly out of the title race.

Due to Leverkusen’s poor fortunes, Newcastle United are now reportedly wondering if Diaby’s situation may have changed.

Newcastle hopeful

Jones shared how Newcastle feel about Diaby.

“There are other people they are looking at here. Moussa Diaby is one of them they might revisit here. They’ve had him on their radar for a long time. He wasn’t gettable in the last transfer window, but they wonder if his situation has changed over the course of the season because things haven’t gone brilliantly so far,” Jones said.

May have a chance

Diaby’s situation may well have changed.

Indeed, the French attacker was only staying at Leverkusen to try and take them to the top, and now, that looks impossible this season.

Fortunately, Newcastle are now in a strong position to mount a challenge for silverware in their respective league, so perhaps the attacker would be tempted by a move to St James’ Park.

As Jones says, Diaby is a player Newcastle like, but would they even have room for him in their team now? Miguel Almiron has transformed into a star in his own right as of late and it’s hard to imagine that he’d be dropped for anyone at this point.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on as we head into January.
