Anton Ferdinand told the Weekend Preview on Premier League Productions that Tottenham had ‘won the league in January’ judging by the ‘reaction of their fans’.
Spurs host Manchester United today in a crucial top-four clash for the North London club, whose path towards Champions League football rests on how they finish this indifferent Premier League season.
At the start of the campaign, when Spurs brought back Gareth Bale, some pundits, such as Harry Redknapp, were backing them for a title charge.
Of course, that didn’t materialise, as ex-Premier League defender, Ferdinand, couldn’t help but aim a jibe at their fans for thinking they had won the league at the turn of the year.
“It’s a massive game for Spurs,” said Ferdinand. “As we saw, they won the league in January, didn’t they? From the reaction of their fans.
“But it’s a massive game for them now to get into the top-four or even the top-six, I would say. And it’s a game they are going to need to win.”
Returning back to Champions League football was always the aim for Spurs, whether that came via the Europa League, the Premier League or even both.
Of course, there is only one path they can go down now, and with Harry Kane proving to be perhaps the Player of the Season, they still have every chance to achieve their goal.
Jose Mourinho would love another six goals today, but that will be unlikely, but six points against Manchester United over the course of the season would be a big tick in the box for the former Old Trafford boss.
