Neil Warnock thinks Manchester United ‘will pay’ for Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips because they won’t put money on the table for Declan Rice from West Ham United, as he told Sky Sports News (09/04/22 at 2:55 pm).

The former Leeds boss thinks the struggling Manchester-based club will be looking at someone like Phillips in the summer.

It’s Alan Smith all over again for the Yorkshire faithful, although, many of the club’s supporters will tell you this situation is very different.

Whilst there was a lot of controversy when, at the start of the Premier League era, Eric Cantona headed to Old Trafford, with Smith the last player from Yorkshire to join.

If this Phillips move were to happen, then it would no doubt cause the biggest stir in recent years, as rumours suggest that Man United, alongside Arsenal, Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa are keen on bringing the hard-hitting midfielder to the club.

This is what the recently-retired Warnock had to say about Phillips possibly donning the colours of Man United.

“I think Manchester United will be looking at people like Phillips,” said Warnock.

“I don’t think they (Man United) will pay for what they (West Ham) want for Rice.

“Whereas, I think they will pay the money for Phillips.”

There’s no doubt that Man United will have the money to throw at Phillips if they wanted to sign him this summer.

But, it’s a completely different thing for the 26-year-old to say ‘yes’ and make that move which would ruin his legacy at Leeds.

But, the Yorkshire faithful will be glad to hear that, Give Me Sport journalist Dean Jones, has suggested that Phillips is becoming ‘more and more convinced’ at staying and signing a new deal.

If that were to happen, then one of England’s biggest clubs, a few years after returning to the promised land, can start to motor up the table and challenge alongside the big boys.
