Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (06/02/21 at 12:50 pm) that Everton will not finish above Liverpool this season.

Sky presenter Jeff Stelling was questioning whether Everton can secure that top-four finish this season and also finish above their rivals.

It has been an indifferent season for all, more so for Liverpool, who if they lose against Manchester City today, will be more in a battle for the top-four, and not the title, given that Pep Guardiola’s men could open up a ten-point lead.

But when it was suggested to Merson about Everton finishing above Liverpool (prior to their 3-3 draw at Manchester United), he wasn’t having any of it.

“I am going to say sixth (On Everton’s season finish),” said Merson. “I think sixth would be great, it’s a starting point. They are in a race to get into the top four.

“But let’s remember, it was only last week that they were getting slaughtered by Newcastle at home.

“Now, all of a sudden I have got Clinton [Morrison] and you [Jeff Stelling] telling me in the break that they are going to finish above Liverpool.

“Oh, no not now? I have put myself out there on live telly and look at Clinton now saying ‘no’.”

Stelling then interrupted and asked whether it’s a possibility to which Merson responded and said: “No. You ask my opinion and I sit here today and say they will not finish above Liverpool. But if they do then wow!”

One thing is for sure, Ancelotti is doing some job on Merseyside and he is getting Everton back on track for those European places.

That was proven when they foot tooth and nail to secure a deserved draw at Old Trafford yesterday.

That means that the Toffees are sitting sixth in the table, three points and a game behind their fourth-placed neighbours, who face off against Manchester City today.
