Speaking on OTB, Phil Thompson has expressed sympathy for Trent Alexander-Arnold after he was asked a tricky question about Manchester City in a press conference this week.

City and Liverpool have been the biggest of rivals in recent years, and with the race for the Premier League title once again heating up, there has been plenty of talk about the two dominant teams of this era.

Alexander-Arnold was asked a rather tricky question ahead of the game against Inter Milan, and Thompson believes that the journalists were trying to fuel something by asking the young right-back such a hard question.

What’s Thompson said?

The pundit spoke about Alexander-Arnold’s handling of the press conference.

“I thought he was asked that and they were trying to fuel something. He didn’t shy away from it and he said that Manchester City were the a wonderful side, they were truly terrific against Sporting, but Liverpool do have that holy grail, they’ve been able to win that Champions League title. They had that disappointment against Chelsea last year, which will fuel their ambition, but as Trent said, Liverpool can compete with them on the same level,” Thompson said.

“Hopefully, it will still be a title race, but I did feel for Trent with the way he was asked that, but he handled it very well the young man.”

Comes with the territory

Thompson says that the media were trying to fuel something by asking Alexander-Arnold about Manchester City, but that comes with the territory of being in a title race.

Yes, it’s tough to navigate these questions, but it’s part and parcel of being a top player at a top club.

We all want to know how City view Liverpool and what Liverpool think of City. It’s the biggest rivalry in football right now, and these questions aren’t going to stop anytime soon.
