Danny Murphy has claimed that people inside Tottenham Hotspur speak ‘very highly’ about Ryan Sessegnon, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Spurs midfielder added that the forthcoming Premier League season is ‘big’ for Sessegnon, who joined the club back in 2019 from Fulham.

During that period, the 22-year-old has endured a frustrating time, including suffering numerous injury problems, but he enjoyed a strong ending to the season last time out.

It’s perhaps a sign of things to come from Sessegnon, who was seen as a wonderkid when in the colours of Fulham, but it’s fair to say, he hasn’t taken those forward steps in his career as he would have liked.

Nonetheless, Murphy shared that there were a number of occasions last season when the versatile defender left him ‘wowed’, as he backed him to produce the goods next season.

“Well, he started a lot more games during the second half of last season,” said Murphy. “He really started to look comfortable in that left wing-back position.

“Obviously, he is being well-coached, he has been given the confidence to go and perform. He had a couple of games where I thought ‘wow, that’s the player they bought’.

“I think he has shown Conte enough that he trusts him because they have Perisic, who I think you can see in certain games play left wing-back, although he is more forward-thinking. But he has the legs to play left wing-back.

“I think, for Sessegnon, it’s a big year for him. But I like him. A couple of mates of mine who are still at the club, they speak about him very highly.”

SESSEGNON’S TIME TO SHINE

This is the time for the player to deliver on that early hype in his career and become a top-performing Premier League player for Spurs.

When Sessegnon was a teenager, there were some even backing him for an England call, but after recently celebrating his 22nd birthday, he is still waiting for that day.

Could he make a late surge into Gareth Southgate’s England squad heading into the 2022 World Cup? Well, there is a chance because that left side is pretty open.

The key thing for Tottenham’s man on the left is staying away from the treatment room and then his football should do the rest of the talking.
