Jamie Carragher has suggested to Sky Sports that Arsenal’s and Liverpool’s players should not be punished for their ownerships’ decisions.
Arsenal and Liverpool both announced their intentions to withdrawn from the European Super League last night.
It capped off a remarkable 48 hours for the breakaway Premier League clubs.
Arsenal apologised to their supporters for making a mistake, while Liverpool put out a brief statement explaining their intention to withdraw.
Already some have suggested that all six Premier League clubs who announced their intentions to join the ESL should be punished, even though they have gone back on their decision.
But Carragher feels that the players should not be reprimanded, and has urged for Arsenal’s and Liverpool’s staff to be left alone.
“Yes, I think so but we should not forget the fact that the Premier League wants them. They want these six teams,” he said.
“The Champions League want them. People might say they should be hit with x, y, z. I’m not saying I’m against or massively for that, I’d probably like to see them get punished to be honest.
“But the most important thing for me is getting everyone together basically. We need these top teams, let’s not pretend that we don’t.
“Should these players be punished? Should the managers be punished? They shouldn’t be!”
Liverpool’s players actually played a major role in getting the club out of the ESL.
Jurgen Klopp and James Milner both spoke out about the newly formed competition on Monday, before all their players made a social media post urging them to withdraw last night.
Arsenal’s players largely remained quiet, but a few such as Rob Holding and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang did post their backing of the club’s withdrawal, after the news was announced.
