Tim Sherwood has stated that Liverpool fans realised what an ‘absolute legend’ Luis Suarez is and gave him a ‘good reception’ when he was substituted during Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Wednesday.
The Sky pundit spoke about how the home fans were ‘killing themselves with laughter’ when Suarez’s goal was ruled out during the Champions League tie, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (03/11/21 at 9:20 pm).
Suarez was handed a start by Diego Simeone, against his former club, but it was a tough evening for the Uruguayan on his former stomping ground.
It didn’t help matters that Liverpool were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes and then, just before the break, Felipe was shown a straight red for a tackle on Sadio Mane.
There was more edge and fiery nature in the build-up to this game, and whilst there was a thunderous start, it soon dampened down.
Nonetheless, Sherwood shared how the Anfield faithful reacted when Suarez’s goal was ruled out and how minutes later they reacted in a different manner.
“They have ruled it out,” said Sherwood. “A massive cheer, you can imagine.
“Luis Suarez is wheeling away thinking he has got his team back in the game and the Liverpool fans are killing themselves with laughter because it has been ruled out.
On his sub: “Luis Suarez goes off, to be fair to Liverpool fans, now he is coming off, they give him a good reception.
“They realise that he was an absolute legend at that football club and they give him the response and reception he deserves. It’s okay, it’s panto season, isn’t it?!”
That’s a 100% record for Jurgen Klopp’s men in this seasons Champions League and an early passage through to the knockout stages.
That is helpful because it will allow them to rest a few players, if Klopp desires, during the final few games.
Until then, whilst the three points would have pleased Liverpool supporters, it’s the clean sheet, their first of the competition so far, that will perhaps please them the most.
