Darren Bent has claimed that Rhian Brewster’s transfer from Liverpool to Sheffield United was a ‘strange one’, as he told Sky Sports Football (07/09/21 at 6:50 pm).
The 21-year-old ended his barren run in front of goal for England U21’s, when he scored from the penalty spot, during his side’s 2-0 win over Kosovo in their Euro 2023 qualifier on Tuesday evening.
It has been a difficult past 12 months for Brewster because, this time last summer, he was making a record £23.5 million transfer to Sheffield United (BBC Sport).
Even though Brewster moved to Bramall Lane as this top young kid from Liverpool, it didn’t work out at all, as he failed to score in the Premier League and the club were relegated to England’s second-tier.
But after his goal for the U21’s this week, Bent is hoping it can ‘kick start’ his career once more because Sheffield United are going to ‘need him’ now.
“Hopefully, that will kick start his season,” said Bent. “Not just for England U21’s, but for Sheffield United as well because they need him.
“He has got the ability. We have seen it. He won the Golden Ball, not too long ago for England U17’s. We have seen it at Swansea, the quality is there, it’s undeniable. He is just going through a barren run.
“The Sheffield United signing, for me, it was a bit of a strange one because they signed him for a lot of money. He went in as a young player, not much Premier League experience, if any.
“Then he doesn’t start for the first 10 to fifteen games and it’s almost like Sheffield United are in a rut and they weren’t still playing – he was on a lose to nothing.”

When Brewster was initially sold by Liverpool, a selection of the fans felt they were making a mistake because they felt he was going to be the next one through their doors after a certain Trent Alexander-Arnold.
But, once again, Michael Edwards pulled off a masterstroke because Brewster is now trying to find his feet in England’s second-tier.
The key thing here is that Sheffield United need to play him up top, rather than out wide and patience is also required.
Brewster proved during his days at Swansea what he is capable of and if he can get that engine going once more then things will start to loom more on the up for the struggling Blades.
