Paul Merson has claimed in The Daily Star that he can see Liverpool nicking a Champions League qualification spot this season.
With six Premier League games to go, Liverpool are sixth in the table and two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
Victory over Newcastle United at Anfield this afternoon would see Jurgen Klopp’s side jump into that top four for a few hours at least, with West Ham – who sit fifth – hosting Chelsea tonight in what could be a massive match.
After Newcastle, Liverpool come up against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but their final four games are against Southampton, West Brom, Burnley and Crystal Palace.
It’s a very handy run-in for the Anfield club – the defending Premier League champions – and Merson feels that Klopp’s side might just finish in the top four after all.
He said: “Liverpool are looking like a threat again and I think they might just sneak into the top four now. They have a nice run of fixtures and the clubs above them are struggling. I think Liverpool are back in it.”
Liverpool fans will love the optimism and really, they should.
If the Reds get their act together, they could very easily win these last six games – including the one at Old Trafford – because as mentioned, we’re talking about the champions of England.
Yes, they have struggled without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson, but Klopp still has more than enough talent to secure entry into next season’s Champions League.
