Stephen Warnock says Liverpool and Everton turned down the chance to sign Brighton and Hove Albion’s rising star, Evan Ferguson.

The former left-back claimed that Evan Ferguson was turned down because ‘he wasn’t quick enough’, as he now thrives in the colours of Europa League-bound, Brighton and Hove Albion.

What is Liverpool and Everton’s loss is now Brighton’s gain, with Warnock advising the 18-year-old to stay at the Amex Stadium beyond this summer, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports News.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side are getting many plaudits for the season they are having, the football they are playing and how some of their young stars are performing on the Premier League stage.

Ferguson is one of those players, as the hard-hitting striker has scored an impressive six goals from 18 Premier League games this term.

Even though the Republic of Ireland international penned down a new contract recently, Warnock thinks interested parties will still come knocking in the summer, as he told the player to stay put.

“I think he will get linked to clubs because of his age,” said Warnock. “Also because of his attributes. What he brings to the team. We see those qualities that he has got.

“It’s interesting because when Ferguson was younger he was looked at by Everton and Liverpool. They said ‘he wasn’t quick enough’.

“But you look at him now, all round and what he has got in his game. He’s matured. He’s looking like a man at such a young age. There will certainly be suitors for him. If I was him, I would stay at Brighton.”

EVAN FERGUSON IS ONE TO WATCH

If the rising teenage star can produce these numbers and performances in what is effectively his breakthrough campaign, then he might just take things up a few levels next season.

Even if some of the bigger boys come knocking, there is no point in the player leaving because his progression is going smoothly with this thriving Brighton side.

Moving to another team just decreases the chances of Ferguson playing, which will just harm his chances of taking his game to another level next season, and he needs to remember that he doesn’t need to rush because he is still a teenager.
