Leeds United director Victor Orta believes West Ham deserve plenty of credit for establishing themselves at the top of the Premier League, speaking to ABC Sevilla.

Sunday’s 2-1 victory at home to Aston Villa could hardly have come at a better time.

Because, in the build up to last weekend’s clash of the clarets, fears were growing that a hugely promising season could be about to peter out.

Not so long ago, some were wondering whether we could see another ‘Leicester City story’ play out in the Premier League, on the back of eye-catching victories over Liverpool and Chelsea.

The Hammers climbed up to third after defeating Jurgen Klopp’s side in November.

Four months on, they are sixth, dropping out of the top four following a run of three wins in eight games.

But, despite losing 1-0 to Sevilla in their UEFA Europa League round-of-16 tie, a season that promised so much could still end with champagne-soaked success.

Where will West Ham finish this season?

“I think the first leg (against Sevilla) described a lot of what West Ham is,” says Orta, highlighting the strengths and the weaknesses of David Moyes’ side.

“A team that doesn’t blush about defending, with almost seven or eight players behind the ball and playing a clearly counterattacking game. A direct style with Michail Antonio. And with a clear plan in which they try to take advantage of their physical superiority in set pieces.

“I think that Sevilla were very good in the first leg. They were patient. I think that’s the best way to play against West Ham. You have to be sure with the ball in your own half, not make absurd mistakes because they always release several players in the attacking areas.

“(Sevilla) also hurt (West Ham) by pressing them high, since they lack quality to get the ball out to the central defenders.

“Also, I think the most important thing is not to give anything away so that they are able to make a quick counter against you.”

Can West Ham win the Europa League?

It should not be forgotten that West Ham were one of the favourites for relegation this time two years ago.

The club’s rapid rise under Moyes is an example and an inspiration for other mid-ranking sides dreaming’s of something bigger.

Like Leeds, for instance.

“This league is very complicated,” Orta adds. “To be fighting with the top six – and they have been doing it for two years now – I think it is very relevant and has a lot of merit.”

Leeds actually beat West Ham in January, thanks to a Jack Harrison hat-trick at the London Stadium.
