Michael Owen has claimed on BT Sport’s coverage of Liverpool versus Atalanta (3/11/20 8PM kick-off) that Diogo Jota has answered any questions about whether or not he is a quality player.

The former Reds striker was analysing the Portugal international’s first-half performance, in which he scored two goals.

Owen was blown away by Jota’s first goal, a deft chipped finish over the goalkeeper.

“That is just an unbelievable finish,” Owen said.

“If Liverpool fans didn’t know or were unsure whether or not they’ve got a top-class recruit on their hands, well they know now. He is special.”

There were questions about Jota’s ability when Liverpool signed him.

Graeme Souness was one pundit who pondered whether or not he was up to the task, but Jota has silenced any critics with his recent form.

Owen’s comments only look better when you realise that Jota would go on to complete his hat-trick in the second half.

Jota has had a dream start to his Liverpool career, netting seven goals in 10 appearances, and he has certainly added that extra dynamic to what was already one of the deadliest attacks in Europe.

We have seen in recent years how good Michael Edwards is at unearthing gems in the transfer market, and it looks as though he has done it again here.

Splashing over £40 million on a winger who scored just seven league goals last season looked like a risk at the time, but he’s slotted in perfectly for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The 23-year-old looks to have an incredibly bright future ahead of him at Anfield.
