Wolfsburg’s sporting director has reiterated his belief that Tottenham Hotspur ‘don’t need’ to sign Holland international Wout Weghorst before the transfer window slams shut in October, while speaking to Sport1.
A 28-year-old, 6ft 6ins warrior of a centre-forward producing the best football of his career in one of Europe’s major leagues – there is something very typically Jose Mourinho about this late-blooming Dutchman.
The increasingly short-tempered Spurs boss has made his desire for a new number nine very public and, according to the Express, £27 million-rated Weghorst has fired his way into contention alongside the likes of Bas Dost, Carlos Vinicius and Arkadiusz Milik.
But, after Son Heung Min and Harry Kane combined spectacularly to smash five goals past Southampton last week, Schafer obviously believes that Weghorst would be better off remaining as the talisman of Wolfsburg rather than warming the bench in North London.

“If you look at the last Tottenham game in the Premier League, you can see that they have few problems on the offensive,” said the former Germany international, who has been very outspoken in his belief that Weghorst should reject a move to England.
“Now they also signed Gareth Bale. There is more of a problem who is allowed to play. They don’t need Wout.”
Mourinho, it seems, does not agree with Schafer’s viewpoint.
As far as he is concerned, Tottenham are crying out for a new centre-forward if they are to contend with a fearsome fixture list which, before Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Leyton Orient was abandoned, would have seen them play nine matches in 21 days.
Weghorst has banged in 38 goals in two seasons at Wolfsburg.
