Speaking to Off The Ball, Robbie Fowler has been discussing where it’s all been going wrong for Liverpool this season.

The Reds haven’t been at their best this term, and there have been many explanations as to why.

Injury crises, fatigue and burnout have all been touted as potential explanations, but Fowler believes that this issue stems from the fact that they haven’t been able to build up any sort of momentum.

Momentum is such a massive aspect within football, but because it’s an intangible measurement, it’s impossible to really pinpoint how to build momentum or when it is lost.

Fowler’s analysis

The Anfield legend gave his view on Liverpool’s struggles.

“I think it plays a factor. They were so near but so far away from winning it. Last year it was a bigger squad and they were based on momentum and that’s what they’ve lacked this year. They haven’t had the 11 that Jurgen has wanted to play, it’s been very stop start and Liverpool are at their best when they’re in full momentum, but they don’t have that at the minute, but they’ll get it back,” Fowler said.

Stop-start

This season has been a funny one for Liverpool, and as Fowler says, it’s been impossible for the Reds to build any sort of momentum.

Their opening day performance against Fulham threw the brakes on their success from last season, and since then it’s been a string of up and down performances.

To be fair, injuries haven’t helped and it’s impossible to build momentum if you’re constantly having to change your XI, but Fowler is certainly right in that the Reds’ inconsistency has been their downfall this term.

Fingers crossed they can rediscover their best form and gather some momentum in 2023.
