David de Gea has been talking about the reason Victor Valdes is training with Manchester United.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been speaking about his countryman Victor Valdes in an interview with Spanish newspaper AS.

The Guardian has now picked up on the comments as De Gea moved to dismiss the speculation linking him with the Old Trafford exit, with the ex-Barcelona star tipped to replace him.

“Yes, my contract runs out in 2016,” the United stopper said. “But they didn’t sign him (Valdes) for that.

“Victor had a difficult injury; he had a bad time and the boss knows him well and has given him the opportunity to recover there.”

Rumours began circulating almost as soon as Valdes arrived in Manchester, with many seeing De Gea’s contract situation as a reason for the experienced ‘keeper to be offered a contract at the club once he had regained his fitness.

Some even claimed he could feature against Arsenal after De Gea suffered a dislocated finger on international duty.

But the United player – who has shone so far this season and is now undoubtedly one of the best ‘keepers in Europe – has moved to quash speculation Valdes was invited to the club to ultimately be his replacement.

That said, until he puts pen to paper on a new contract, expect the speculation linking him with Real Madrid to continue.
