Emi Martinez rued Aston Villa giving away cheap goals during their 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, as he told Villa TV.

The Villa goalkeeper added that Villa were ‘sloppy’ again to concede early, whilst Spurs ‘created nothing’ to go 2-0 up via the left foot of Dejan Kulusevski at the start of the second half.

In the end, it was a ruthless display by Antonio Conte and his players, with Heung-Min Son showcasing his magic by scoring a stunning hat-trick.

It’s understandable why Martinez, who didn’t do much wrong for the goals conceded, will feel annoyed because three punts down the middle of Villa’s pitch resulted in goals.

This is something that has become a habit for the Midlands side this season and it needs to be addressed if they are to secure a European finish next season.

“We concede so early again, which is something we need to adjust,” said Martinez. “We are conceding goals within ten minutes of games and starting sloppy.

“When you give Spurs space, with the quality they have got, then they can hurt you. So it’s hard to take. It’s unlucky (Tottenham’s second goal). I think Ty (Mings) tried to block it and it went through his legs.

“So, we started again in the second half, with another goal with nothing. They created nothing.

“Then, obviously 2-0 you need to chase the game and they got more space and hurt that space. We didn’t defend the red zone properly.”

Whilst Tottenham are now taking charge of securing Champions League football, it’s another disappointing season for those in Claret and Blue colours.

Steven Gerrard wants Europe and, come the summer, he may well rip out the spine of this Villa side in order for them to compete with the best in years to come.

Who stays and most importantly who is brought in during the summer transfer window is going to be very, very important.

The same for Spurs, but for them, it’s probably more about signing Harry Kane down to a new contract, followed by Antonio Conte, then ensuring those cherries on the cake are backed up by a number of additions in the market.
