Stephen Warnock has shared on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport what the Liverpool players were watching on the team bus prior to their Champions League showdown with Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
The former Reds defender stated that the Liverpool players were shown clips from their comeback win against Borussia Dortmund in 2016, and ‘they couldn’t believe what they were watching’.
Whilst Liverpool ended up getting knocked out of the Champions League last night, before the game, that Dortmund game was used as a form of motivation because it was five years to the day on Wednesday that they produced one of those famous Anfield comebacks.
James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi are the only survivors from that match, with Dejan Lovren being the hero on that night.
“There have been social media videos going around today of when, it was five years ago to the day, that Liverpool beat Dortmund,” said Warnock. “And what a night that was!
“There were videos circulating from Liverpool players on the bus and they couldn’t believe what they were watching.
“Now, they have had three or four thousand trying to lift them down by the bus when they come in.
“But it’s not the same when they are in the ground. That’s the difficulty.”

Unfortunately for Liverpool, unlike Dortmund and that even better comeback against Barcelona, no crowds were present inside the stadium this time around.
Liverpool’s energy going forward was on show yesterday, but if the crowds were present then they would have perhaps forced the Madrid players to produce out-of-character moments.
But that wasn’t possible, and perhaps to the surprise of not many, they have had to bow out of the quarter-final stages.
