‘They can afford both’: David Moyes tipped to sign ‘fantastic’ duo for West Ham United

Clinton Morrison has tipped David Moyes’ West Ham United to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher and Southampton captain, James Ward-Prowse.

The former Premier League striker thinks West Ham can ‘afford them both’ and they are players that are ‘needed’ at the London Stadium ahead of the new season, as he told Sky Sports.

After selling Declan Rice for a club-record transfer to Arsenal, they have a big hole to fill, which won’t be covered by one, or possibly even just two players joining.

That’s why a host of midfield players have been rumoured to join the Europa Conference League winners, with Conor Gallagher on Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA, whilst James Ward-Prowse is preparing for life in the Championship.

You would imagine, a player of Ward-Prowse’s talents and experience, will get that move to a Premier League team and West Ham is a realistic destination – positive talks have been held between both clubs.

Morrison spoke about the duo’s skill sets and how the Hammers need the ‘energy’ of Gallagher and dead-ball qualities of his England teammate.

“They can afford both of them, can’t they?!” said Morrison. “I think they need both of them. It’s a big hole losing Declan Rice. I think Ward-Prowse would be fantastic. You see his dead-ball and set-pieces that he has got.

“I think Conor Gallagher. The energy he gives you is fantastic. He will get you goals and they need a bit of energy in that midfield.

“If I am David Moyes, then I am telling the chairman ‘get me both of them’.”

West Ham United without Rice

The previous campaign, in the Premier League, didn’t go as well as fans or those inside the club would have liked, as they avoided being dragged into a relegation battle during the final few weeks of the campaign.

That Europa Conference League win in Prague lightened up the campaign and made a nearly forgettable season into an unforgettable one.

But now they start life without Rice, and if they struggled in the league with him last time out, then you do worry about how things will start in 2022/23, because if they get off to a slow start, then the knives will be out for Moyes.
