Danny Murphy has claimed that he was ‘really surprised’ by how Leeds United played during their 2-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.

The former midfielder added that Leeds United are ‘still committing men forward’ and they are still playing with a ‘high tempo’ under Jesse Marsch, as he was left ‘impressed’ by their opening three points yesterday, as he told Premier League Productions (06/08/22 at 5:10 pm).

Daniel Podence opened the scoring for the visitors to perhaps bring back bad memories of last season and their near-return to England’s second tier.

But Marsch’s men kept at it, stuck their chest out and equalised through versatile star Rodrigo, with this being Leeds’ first game since selling Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha this summer.

Given that many would have tipped the Yorkshire side to possibly go down this season or be involved in another relegation fight.

This is a great start to the new campaign, Marsch’s first full season at the club, as Murphy also loved the confrontation the American had with Bruno Lage at full-time.

“I was really surprised and impressed by Leeds’ reaction,” said Murphy.

“They are still committing men forward. They are still playing with a high tempo and it was a poor defensive play from Wolves and it was bad goalkeeping (from Sa). He has to do better.

“But we like a bit of that (Marsch and Lage confrontation at FT). It’s a bit of passion.”

POSITIVE DEBUTS

There were a number of new faces on show in Yorkshire and all of them produced positive displays.

It was a new midfield partnership for Leeds with Tyler Adams partnering Marc Roca in the middle of the park, the latter was subbed off later in the second half.

Whilst new boy Brenden Aaronson was involved in the winning goal, as he continued his form from pre-season and brought it onto the Premier League stage.

Right-back Rasmus Kristensen was another player who was handed his debut and it will be interesting to see if Marsch dips into the transfer market again.

Whilst it was great for Leeds that Patrick Bamford is now back, the Englishman needs competition and perhaps added depth is needed for that number nine role.
