Paul Scholes has hailed Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho as the ‘leaders’ inside Liverpool’s squad, as he told Premier League Productions (19/04/22 at 10:15 pm).

The recently inducted Premier League Hall of Famer was comparing the lack of leaders at Manchester United and how those at Liverpool have them in ‘abundance’.

On Tuesday night, a number of those players were on the pitch when Jurgen Klopp watched his side thrash out-of-sorts Man United 4-0 at Anfield.

Someone like Milner didn’t even start the game, as he came on for the last five minutes to see out the party on Merseyside.

Nonetheless, through gritted teeth, Scholes admires what has been built with these Liverpool players, as the iconic midfielder praised the dressing room and its culture.

“We talk about leaders in the Manchester United group, I can’t think of any,” said Scholes. “There’s none that stand out.

“You look at this Liverpool team. James Milner, not even playing. Jordan Henderson. Van Dijk, Matip and Fabinho. They are all leaders. Men. They are real men. A real man’s team.

“I remember Sir Alex saying, the hardest part of his job was getting towards the end of the season and leaving really good players out of big games. And this manager has the same to deal with.

“But it’s down to Jordan (Henderson), who can realise one of the lads is upset. A bit down. Would he then cause a bit of trouble in the squad? I think it’s up to those characters to make sure they don’t do that. And Liverpool have that type of character and leader in abundance.”

The gulf in quality between Liverpool and Manchester United couldn’t be bigger – and the signs suggest that it’s only getting wider.

The proof is in the fact that Man United have zero trophies to play for heading into the final few weeks of the season – and are trophyless for the last five campaigns.

Whilst those over on Merseyside are still pushing for all four and they already have one wrapped in the bag – the League Cup.

Man United are the only English side in history to win the treble.

If Liverpool manage to follow or better that achievement, then this season will go from being a complete mess to becoming downright ugly for those in Man United colours.
