Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has given an update on Tottenham’s transfer plans and an insight into their budget.
Unfortunately, it’s bad news for anyone that was expecting a mass overhaul of the squad this summer, as Castles claims Tottenham aren’t willing to put a big budget into signing reinforcements.
However, Jose Mourinho has reportedly been able to convince Spurs that they do need to improve the defence.
“There’s a huge criticism of just about everything Mourinho does and a disgruntled supporter base who want to see a change in manager and also a change in players, which is something Mourinho wants, but he’s aware that it’s going to be difficult to do because Tottenham aren’t willing, at present, to put a big budget into reinforcements, although they accept his argument that the defence needs to be upgraded in the summer,” Castles said.
Things at Tottenham are a little bleak at the moment, but this is at least one bit of good news.
Spurs undoubtedly need to improve their defence, so the fact that Mourinho has been able to convince them to do so is a great sign.
Who they bring in and which positions they decide to bolster remains to be seen, but links to the likes of Lewis Dunk and Joachim Andersen certainly suggest they’re keen on at least one centre-back.
A right-back could also be a priority given the fact that both Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty have struggled at times this season.
This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
