Craig Burley is stunned by suggestions that Darwin Nunez might not adapt successfully to life at Liverpool.
Liverpool made the 22-year-old their record signing this week by agreeing an £85 million transfer fee with Benfica for the Uruguay international.
The reason for his club-record fee is because the young attacker netted 34 goals in all competitions for the Portuguese outfit last season, including two against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Champions League.
And Burley, speaking to ESPN, cannot believe what he’s hearing about the player potentially not adapting to Klopp’s style of play, claiming he has ‘every attribute’ needed to thrive in the Premier League.
He told ESPN: “I’ve heard a lot of these people who crawl out of the woodwork and say ‘I don’t think he’ll fit in’. This fit-in brigade has sort of popped up and raised its head. Good players generally fit in. He has every attribute – a bit like Haaland to an extent – but not quite at that level. Big, physical and two-footed.”
Will Darwin Nunez be a success at Liverpool?
In a word, probably.
Nobody has consistently spent massive money better than Liverpool since Klopp arrived at Anfield almost seven years ago.
Whoever Klopp and Michael Edwards have invested heavily in, generally they do the business on the field for the Reds and it would be a shock if Nunez didn’t carry on that tradition.
He might not hit the ground running and be as prolific as Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah immediately.
But remember, this is a 22-year-old set for his first year in the Premier League.
Mane and Salah had experience of English football before coming to Liverpool and in time, it’s entirely possible that the South American will be just as influential in attack.
