Trae Young is reportedly set to turn down one of the largest player options in NBA history, and only LeBron James has ever walked away from a bigger one.
At first glance, the number makes it look like a bold move.
But the context makes it look logical.
Trae Young’s player option decision joins LeBron James’ territory
A recent report on Young’s future outlined why Washington’s situation is so unusual, with a proven All-Star guard, the No. 1 pick, and a long-term contract question all colliding at once.
ESPN reported through Andscape’s Marc Spears that Young plans to decline his $48,967,380 player option for 2026-27 and become a free agent, while Washington remains the front-runner to keep him. Spotrac lists the same exact option figure.
That puts Young in rare contract territory. The only player in NBA history to decline a larger player option was LeBron James, who turned down a $51.4 million Lakers option in 2024 before signing a new two-year deal with Los Angeles.
The comparison is not about status. James was already an icon negotiating late-career flexibility. Young is 27, looking to turn a short Wizards stint into a long-term max deal after a midseason trade that Shams Charania first reported had Washington as his preferred destination.

What LeBron James and Trae Young do next
Both players are expected to land new deals when free agency opens, but their situations are very different.
Young’s path appears more straightforward. Washington can offer the most years and money, and Spears reported that Young is happy with the team and city. The Wizards also need a lead creator around Anthony Davis, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and whichever prospect they take at No. 1.
The question is whether there are many teams outside Washington ready to offer him a max contract. While Young’s playmaking is elite, concerns over his defense, injury history, and ball-dominant style may limit his market. That is why staying with the Wizards still seems like the most likely outcome.
James’ situation is more open-ended. He is expected to work toward another deal, but if he takes a significant pay cut, teams like the Warriors or Cavaliers could become realistic options. Golden State could offer a final run alongside Steph Curry. Cleveland could provide a fitting storybook ending.
Still, the simplest outcomes may prevail. Young secures long-term stability in Washington, and James negotiates another carefully structured contract. The focus will be on the money they turned down, but the real story is the leverage it gives them.
