Newcastle United fans are arguably the most frustrated football supporters in the country at the moment. The Magpies faithful were sold a dream but, after four months, Mike Ashley still owns the club and it looks like that won’t change anytime soon.
It looked certain at one point that the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) would take over the club from Ashley. Newcastle were even linked with a few of the best players in the world, but the dream was shattered when the group publicly withdrew their interest last month.
That is heartbreaking for Newcastle fans who had been waiting so long for the proposed deal to go through. It was arguably worse for Steve Bruce who, although he was still the boss, had no idea whether he would remain in charge next season.
Now there is some level of clarity over the club’s ownership status, Bruce addressed the situation and claimed that there’s nothing worse than the uncertainty that surrounded the club for months.
He told the Chronicle: “There’s nothing worse than uncertainty because it just filters down at any club. No matter how you try to fudge it, it filters down to everybody.
“Am I going to be safe? Is my job going to be safe? That’s not just from me it’s everybody around the ground, and it causes unsettlement.
“Of course it does. We’re glad there’s a little bit of clarity. It’s done now and we get on with it. It’s business as usual and we have to box clever over the summer because of the financial situation.”
It’s not all clear yet for Bruce
Although the PIF have declared themselves out of the race to buy the club, there have been suggestions they could still come back and complete the deal if they agree to provide the additional information that the Premier League are demanding. (read here)
There has been interest from other wealthy groups as well which, sadly, casts a cloud of uncertainty again, with just about three weeks left before the start of the new season.
Bruce and everyone else at the club are glad that they still have a job amid all the rumours of changes at the club.
It is never a good thing to go into a new campaign with such uncertainty over their heads, but the Newcastle boss will have to find a way to keep everyone focused.
