Steven Bergwijn looks set to leave Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur but, speaking to Calciomercato, the Dutchman’s agent insists that there is ‘nothing’ in reports linking Napoli with a January swoop.

As far as injuries go, the calf problem that has kept Bergwijn out of action during the last few weeks feels particularly cruel.

In late-December, the former PSV Eindhoven talisman produced arguably the finest performance of his Tottenham career, scoring one and setting up the other in the 2-1 EFL Cup quarter-final victory over West Ham United.

Bergwijn, you’d imagine, would have been hoping to build on that sparkling display.

Imagine the disappointment, then, when Spurs’ £27 million speedstar limped off just 26 minutes into the Boxing Day clash with Crystal Palace later that week.

He hasn’t been seen since. The question is, will we ever see Bergwijn again in a Tottenham shirt?

Has Steven Bergwijn played his last game for Tottenham?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs boss Antonio Conte has decided to cash in on Bergwijn this month. Napoli have been linked but, so far, the only offer to arrive came from the 24-year-old’s old employers Ajax.

“Seeing him at Napoli would be an honour,” says Francesco Miniero, an agent who works for the Dutch-based Muy Manero agency.

“But there is really nothing (in the reports linking him with the Serie A giants).”

In truth, the writing was on the wall for Bergwijn as soon as Conte was announced as Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor in November.

It was Conte, after all, who turned down the chance to bring Bergwijn to Inter Milan during his time in the San Siro dugout.

“Bergwijn was very close to Inter but then, in the summer, (Conte’s predecessor Luciano) Spalletti left,” Miniero adds.

“If a coach who played with 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 had arrived, he would have signed for the Nerazzurri.”
