Michael Owen told Premier League Productions that there is ‘no way’ that Liverpool were going to pay £30-40 million for a player this month amid rumours that they are close to signing Ben Davies.
Sky Sports have reported that Preston centre-back Davies is set for a shock move to Liverpool as both clubs have agreed on a £1.6 million fee.
Davies isn’t the only player who might make the switch to Merseyside because 20-year-old Schalke defender Ozan Kabak will join on an initial six-month loan deal before joining on a permanent transfer in the summer.
Nonetheless, former Anfield striker Owen was first asked to share his thoughts on the Davies deal.
“I know what they want,” said Owen. “They don’t want to spend big money because they have big-hitters coming back in Matip, Van Dijk and Gomez, they are absolutely delighted with that for the future.
“If you’re not spending big money, quite naturally the quality is going to dip. So, now is that quality good enough to be better than a Nat Phillips? And then that’s the big debate.
“Liverpool is a very structured model and they always look to the future. There’s no way that they are going to waste a load of money £30-40 million on a top centre-half and then have too many bodies next season.”
On Sunday, Liverpool recorded a 3-1 win at West Ham, with Jurgen Klopp having to partner more fresh faces at the heart of his defence.
This time it was Jordan Henderson and Nat Phillips who took to the dance floor and they were pretty flawless throughout.
But it seems with the new arrivals the likes of Henderson can go back in midfield and Rhys Williams and Phillips may have to step aside.
Nonetheless, this is what former Premier League winner Sherwood had to say about Davies’ potential arrival.
Sherwood then added: “If he is better than Phillips and he is better than Williams then you bring him in. No problem. You can always send him back out. He’s coming for nothing or a very minimal fee.
“If he comes to Liverpool and plays 10 games then he’s worth more than whatever they are going to pay for him. They can loan him out, bring him back in and do whatever they want with him in the future.
“But the kid might be a sensation. He might come in and take to the Premier League like a duck to water.
