Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has slammed Arsenal for allowing Raheem Sterling to score a header against them this weekend.
The former Manchester United man has claimed that it’s inexcusable for the Arsenal defenders to allow a player of Sterling’s height to get above them.
To be fair to Ferdinand, Sterling isn’t renowned for his aerial prowess and Arsenal shouldn’t have let him score from such a situation.
“Listen, I have to say that Messi wouldn’t beat me in the air, but he did in the Champions League,” Ferdinand said.
“I understand that these things can happen, but I’d have been critical of myself in that game, it’s a mistake, gambling. There’s no excuse for letting someone like Sterling score who’s not tall enough to get up to his neck, let alone get above him to win a header.”
Ferdinand isn’t saying anything we don’t already know.
The fact that Sterling was allowed to score a header against Arsenal was slightly embarrassing, and it was an even bigger kick in the teeth due to the fact that was the only goal of the game.
Arsenal could very easily have come away with a point against the Cityzens if they’d stopped the diminutive winger, but a defensive lapse allowed him to nod one home.
Hopefully, the Gunners learn from their mistakes and they don’t allow one of the shortest players in the league to score a header against them again.
