Rangers legend Stuart McCall believes there is ‘no chance’ that Steven Gerrard will leave Ibrox and join Liverpool’s arch-rivals Everton as their new manager, as he told talkSPORT (2 June, 12.40pm).

While some on the blue half of Merseyside would welcome Rafa Benitez with open arms despite his allegiances with the club on the other side of Stanley Park, the prospect of Gerrard taking Carlo Ancelotti’s place in the Goodison Park dugout is another matter entirely.

The Athletic raised plenty of eyebrows on Tuesday afternoon when, following Ancelotti’s unexpected return to Real Madrid, they reported that the former Liverpool captain was one of the names on Everton’s initial shortlist.

You can see why the Toffees would be interested in an ambitious, homegrown manager who, during three years at Ibrox, has demonstrated a tendency to eke every ounce of potential out of the players at his disposal while turning promising youngsters into ruthless winning machines.

Could a Liverpool legend replace Ancelotti at Everton?

But surely Gerrard is not going to take a sledgehammer to his Anfield legacy by joining the bitter rivals of the club he captained with distinction for well over a decade.

“I’ve seen a certain Steven Gerrard mentioned but there’s no way he’ll be leaving Rangers that’s for sure,” said McCall, the former Rangers manager who also played over 100 games for Everton in the late-’80s and early-’90s.

“I was gutted when I saw the news (that Ancelotti had gone). I was hoping he was going to be there for a while.

“He certainly looked like the man who was going to turn Everton’s fortunes around.”

The Athletic reports that, alongside Gerrard, Erik Ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick, Paulo Fonseca and the familiar face of Roberto Martinez are also under consideration.
