Stuttgart director Sven Mislintat has confirmed Wolves’ ‘interest’ in Bundesliga striker Sasa Kalajdzic ahead of a potential move to the Premier League for the giant the Austria international, speaking to Sky Germany.
Bruno Lage, albeit more out of necessity than design, persisted with his false nine experiment during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. But Daniel Podence, that goal at Leeds United aside, continues to look a square peg in a round hole.
Sasa Kalajdzic, then, will be welcomed with open arms at Molineux. From a ‘false nine’ to a ‘proper’ one; An old-school, 6ft 7ins penalty-pox poacher just as comfortable throwing himself at crosses as he is linking the play with clever touches and knock-downs.
According to Sky, Wolverhampton Wanderers are willing to pay £15 million for Kalajdzic. While that falls short of Stuttgart’s £21 million valuation, personal terms are not expected to pose much of a problem.
And Mislintat admits that reports of Wolves’ interest are bang on. Suggestions that they are in ‘advanced talks’ with Kalajdzic, however, do not appear to be quite so accurate.
Will Wolves bring in Sasa Kalajdzic from Stuttgart?
“There is initial interest from England,” says the former Arsenal and Dortmund talentspotter. “Wolves is one of them (looking at Kalajdzic).
“But it’s not really concrete at the moment, either on one side or the other.”
The 25-year-old, Vienna-born hitman has been one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable marksmen over the last two-and-a-bit seasons; scoring 22 times in 39 league starts.
One wonders whether Kalajdzic’s presence can spark some life into Adama Traore’s spluttering Wolves career. As you might expect, given that he could fit into Peter Crouch’s trousers, Kalajdzic is a real threat in the air. Traore might finally have someone capable of getting on the end of his trademark back-post crosses, at least when Raul Jimenez is unavailable.
“I don’t know myself how my future will turn out,” Kalajdzic told Kicker earlier this month. “But that will become apparent in the next few weeks, or as soon as possible.”
