Graeme Souness told the Football Show on Sky Sports on Monday morning that he finds it ‘unusual’ that Tottenham have sacked Jose Mourinho.

With the proposed European Super League dominating the headlines, Spurs have tried to steal some of that limelight by announcing the surprise departure of their controversial coach, only days before their League Cup final against Manchester City on Sunday.

Mourinho isn’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea and he proved that during his days at Tottenham where his comments, whether pre or post-match, didn’t sit well with some people.

Souness thinks something has gone on behind the scenes for this situation to elevate in such a manner that Mourinho is no longer in charge.

“I am surprised,” said Souness. “I think the timing is most unusual given that they have a cup final coming up.

“Obviously, something has gone on. I am not sure he would have been happy with the way the league form was going. They were in and out.

“I think second-guessing, Mourinho is a top manager that he has come so frustrated with some of the players. You get so frustrated. You tried everything and end up having harsh words and falling out with them.

“Something has brought it to ahead. There has been an incident or incidents to make their chairman make this decision.

On where he goes next: “He’s a big name. He’s a big manager. I think he will be welcomed by other big clubs. He has a track record that is up there with the very, very best. He has a way of working which isn’t so attractive to a lot of people. But he gets the job done.

“I think that’s the top and bottom of it (Mourinho potentially falling out with players). You want to be nice to them. You want to be their mate – I think ultimately he has got so frustrated that he has had words with people and, as always, it’s the manager that goes.”

Now, all eyes will be on Daniel Levy to see who he pushes for next because going for that proven and trophy-laden coach simply hasn’t worked.

With the League Cup final looming and Tottenham still hoping of finishing in the top four, it will be interesting to see if Levy brings someone in before Sunday’s showdown with Manchester City.

Levy was at Goodison Park on Friday and he now has a big decision to make in regards to who replaces Mourinho in the dugout next.

From Julian Nagelsmann to Eddie Howe, many names will be touted during these coming weeks and the right call has to be made by Levy, especially with seventh-placed Tottenham, who have never won the European Cup, bigging themselves up to the European Super League.
