Roberto Martinez told Amazon Prime Sport that there has been an ‘evolution’ involving Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.
The Belgium boss believes that the player Henderson is today, he wasn’t that player when he once donned the colours of Sunderland.
On Wednesday night, Henderson played a major part in Liverpool moving to the top of the Premier League table as Jurgen Klopp’s men left it late to beat Spurs.
After the game, Martinez spoke in awe of Henderson and how the combative player is allowing the more younger players to express themselves.
“This is not the player we saw at Sunderland,” said Martinez. “I think there has been an evolution in the way that he plays. Look at the way he is involved. 135 touches.
“He’s almost that gel that any team needs. There is no wonder that the young players coming into this side and they can be themselves and perform.
“It’s down to the captain. He leads by example and he performs in the manner that he did.”
Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp
- Champions League
2018/19
- UEFA Super Cup
2019
- FIFA Club World Cup
2019
- Premier League
2019/20
Since the start of the season, Klopp has handed a number of starts to Liverpool’s academy products from Rhys Williams to Curtis Jones.
The above two players started their side’s win last night and it could be argued that they were the two best players on the pitch.
One of the main reasons behind that is the confidence which their manager has given them away from the pitch.
Plus, a player like Henderson brings that extra 10, 20 and 30% out of players, whilst also allowing the youngsters to remain calm and collected during tough situations.
