Jetro Willems could return to Newcastle United in January from Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, his agent Sigi Lens has told Hessenschau.

The Netherlands international has made no secret of his desire to head back to St James’ Park at some point in the near future.

And, almost a year after his loan spell on Tyneside was cut short after a cruelly timed ligament injury, Willems could be handed a chance to return to familiar surroundings when the January transfer window swings open.

The Chronicle reports that, if he can prove his fitness, Steve Bruce will welcome the former PSV Eindhoven flyer back to the Premier League next month.

“Of course there is a possibility,” Lens explains when asked about a second spell at Newcastle for Willems. “Jetro got along very well in England and is willing to go back there.”

Willems is due to become a free agent at the end of the season but, according to Lens, Frankfurt want to tie him down to a new contract.

Whether that means they are serious about keeping the two-time Eredivisie winner – or merely want to protect the value of their asset and avoid losing him for a cut-price fee – is anyone’s guess.

“They want to extend the contract,” Lens adds. “Either we extend the contract or he goes in winter.”

Newcastle paid substantial money to sign Jamal Lewis from Norwich City in the summer so Willems would more than likely be viewed as a useful back-up by Bruce, particularly with Paul Dummett suffering injury problems of his own.
