Steven Gerrard has told Sky Sports that he has never seen Rangers captain James Tavernier perform to a high standard like this so regularly.
Tavernier skippered the Gers to a 4-0 win away to Ross County this afternoon as Gerrard’s side initially moved 14 points clear of Celtic, who weren’t playing the first of their three games in hand until later today.
The Rangers right-back posted a fine performance once again, setting up two and scoring the Ibrox side’s second of the game.
The 29-year-old has a phenomenal 16 goals and 11 assists across all competitions this season.
And Gerrard admitted in a post-match interview that he’s been blown away by his captain, claiming he hasn’t seen him like this before.
He said: “He’s certainly playing at a very consistent level. Since we’ve come in I’ve never seen James at this level in terms of consistency and there’s a difference in him in terms of his hunger. He’s shown incredible leadership on and off the pitch. Really proud of him.”
Gerrard is right about his leadership.
That’s one thing you could’ve accused Tavernier of lacking in the past, especially earlier in the year with his comments before a defeat by Hamilton, when he claimed that he and his Rangers team-mate struggle when teams put them under pressure.
But he’s a different sort of captain these days and long may it last for the light Blues.
