Last night, Newcastle’s chances of hiring José Mourinho increased slightly, after his Roma side were hammered 6-1 in the UEFA Conference League.

What’s the story?

Well, Italian journalist Enrico Camelio has been speaking to Calciomercato in the aftermath of the defeat, and Newcastle were mentioned.

Camelio believes Newcastle’s chances of hiring Mourinho have just increased as, if things continue as they are, he won’t be at Roma for long.

Camelio said: “There’s a 70% chance that, if it continues like this, then he goes to Newcastle. If he didn’t like the squad, he shouldn’t have come. Pinto (Director of Football) needs to be fired and Mourinho, he’s the second culprit.”

Now, that is very interesting.

Mourinho recently admitted he has an ‘emotional connection‘ to Newcastle due to his relationship with the late Sir Bobby Robson.

However, the three-time Premier League champion added that he will be staying at Roma.

If more defeats like last night’s loss follow, it may not be Mourinho’s decision to stay in Rome.

His side have now lost four of their last seven games in all competitions.

Should Newcastle hire José Mourinho?

In our view, even if the 58-year-old does become available, Newcastle should steer clear.

Mourinho has been sacked from his last three jobs at Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, while things are already turning sour at Roma.

The Portuguese coach often throws his players under the bus, when he isn’t parking it in front of the goal, and did so again last night when complaining about the quality of his squad (Sky Sports).

That was despite the fact Roma spent €100m (£84m) on new players over the summer.

That in itself proves, no matter how much PIF give him to spend, it isn’t about money – his methods are outdated in the modern game.
