LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 03: Jordan Pickford of Everton drops the ball leading to Neal Maupay of Brighton and Hove Albion scoring his team's first goal during the Premier League match between Everton and Brighton & Hove Albion at Goodison Park on October 03, 2020 in Liverpool, England. Everton legend Neville Southall has defended Jordan Pickford by stating that he must be ‘half-decent’ if Carlo Ancelotti is picking him, as he told Sky Sports.

The former shot-stopper stated that if Pickford’s ‘job was on the line’ then there would be a ‘taxi outside Goodison tomorrow’ waiting to pick him up.

All of this comes after Pickford made yet another mistake and the club then made the decision to sign Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen on loan on Deadline Day.

This is what Southall had to say about Pickford’s latest blunder:

“His mistakes aren’t killing us,” Southall told Sky Sports. “I think that’s a good thing – and I think once he finds his form, we’ll be flying.

“There’ll be a time when we have that little bump in the road and maybe we’ll have to rely on him. Maybe people will have to change their opinions.

“But I do think, if Mr Ancelotti wants to play you, you must be half-decent. If his job was on the line, there’d be a taxi outside Goodison tomorrow.”

The signing of Olsen is the cherry on the cake for a team sitting at the top of the Premier League cake after four games.

The Toffees have perhaps had the best window out of all the clubs in England’s top-flight and it now provides Ancelotti with a big chance in trying to steer the clubs towards Europe.

If they are to achieve a top-seven finish then someone like Pickford needs to cut out his mistakes because he ended the last campaign by being error-prone against Bournemouth and he has now started the new campaign in a similar fashion.

But the arrival of Olsen now puts some much-needed pressure on his shoulders, which bodes well for competition.
