What if the unthinkable happened at Leeds?
Leeds United fans were rightly worried when Marcelo Bielsa called a emergency press conference yesterday afternoon.
The Argentine has a history of surprise resignations, having left Lazio after just two days.
As it turned out, Bielsa wanted to give a presentation to journalists around his methods surrounding the so-called Spygate furore, without today’s pre-match press conference becoming a distraction.
Leeds fans did panic, especially when one misinformed online outlet claimed he was set to depart.
So what would have happened if Bielsa had walked out on Leeds?
Fans would have gone into a state of mourning, with the charismatic Argentine becoming a real favourite on and off the pitch.
Replacing him would be tough, and there is only one man who Leeds should have considered.
That is under-23 coach Carlos Corberan, who is carrying out a dual role this season also working as part of Bielsa’s staff as first team coach.
Corberan arrived at the same time as Thomas Christiansen in 2017, having worked in Cyprus at the same time as his fellow Spaniard.
After a tricky start, Corberan has changed the fortunes of the under-23 side.
The season before he took over they finished bottom of their division. Now Leeds currently top the table.
A number of Corberan’s players have made the transition to the first team, partly in thanks to his work with them, and more will follow.
When the day comes that Bielsa does eventually walk away, Corberan is ideally positioned to take over and continue his project.
Hopefully for Leeds though, that is a long way off.
