Alan Shearer was critical of Hugo Lloris’s ‘error’ during Tottenham’s 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle United on Sunday.
It was a rosy afternoon for Spurs in front of their own supporters, aside from Lloris providing the away side with a helping hand when he got beat by his near post following a Fabian Schar free-kick.
Even though Antonio Conte’s side went 1-0 down to the Magpies, they well and truly ripped their opponents apart in the second half.
Lloris would have been watching on with relief between his sticks, as Harry Kane, even though he didn’t score, turned it on in fine style.
But Shearer stated there is ‘no way’ Lloris should have been beaten by his near side yesterday and explained it was because he took his first step to the opposite side of the ball, as he told Premier League Productions.
“Keeper error,” said Shearer. “The keeper should save that. There is no way he can be beaten on that side.
“We saw James Ward-Prowse against Leeds. The keeper sets the wall up and if the forward has the ability to put it over the wall. You say ‘okay, well done’. Like Cresswell did in the first game.
“But the goalkeeper just can’t. You look at him. He takes a step to his right side, when he does that. It’s too late. His view isn’t impeded at all.
“Once that step is taken, it’s too late. That’s his side. He has vacated that side and it’s a goalkeeper error.”

That performance was a statement of intent from Tottenham to their Champions League-chasing rivals.
West Ham beat Everton earlier on Sunday to keep up their Premier League top-four hopes alive, whilst Manchester United dropped points the day before against Leicester City.
As for Arsenal, who have been replaced in fourth by Spurs, they take on Crystal Palace on Monday night.
It’s the Gunners who are still in the driving seat because they have two games in hand, whilst also being level on points with Spurs.
