Former Premier League referee and PGMOL boss Keith Hackett has delivered his verdict on Alexandre Lacazette’s disallowed goal in Arsenal’s defeat to Leicester City on Sunday.

The Gunners started brightly against Brendan Rodgers’ side at the Emirates. Lacazette did brilliantly well to guide the ball from an early corner into the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed.

Granit Xhaka was in an offside position when Lacazette made contact with the ball and the goal was disallowed as a result. Mikel Arteta was visibly annoyed with the decision, as were a number of Arsenal fans.

The Gunners boss revealed after the final whistle that he was given no explanation by the referees for the disallowed goal. (Sky Sports) Arsenal went on to lose the game 1-0, but things could have been very different if VAR had intervened.

Lacazette’s goal should have counted

Former PGMOL boss Hackett was asked on Twitter about the decision, and he has put an end to the debate. He claims that the goal should have stood, which has annoyed Arsenal fans even more.

Leicester City came into the game with one plan – weather the storm until Jamie Vardy was ready to come on at the hour mark. The Foxes did exactly that and their star striker finished a brilliant move to give his side all three points.

The game could have been very different if Lacazette’s goal was allowed at the start of the game. Leicester would have had to chase the game which would have opened up a lot of space in the midfield.

Arsenal’s attackers would have had more room to penetrate Leicester’s final third, but with the scores level, the Foxes remained incredibly organised and limited the hosts to nothing, especially in the second half.
