Brendan Rodgers has claimed that ‘there is always gossip’ after he was asked how it feels not to be linked with the Everton manager’s job, as he told his Leicester City pre-match press conference.

The former Liverpool manager shared that there was ‘disappointment’ in seeing Rafa Benitez getting sacked by the Merseyside club.

At this moment in time, Duncan Ferguson will take temporary charge of the Toffees ahead of their showdown with Aston Villa on Saturday.

It’s just a small matter of Steven Gerrard vs Duncan Ferguson on the touchline, which will be some head-to-head clash.

It’s not yet known what Everton will do for the rest of the campaign and whether or not they will bring in a permanent manager during these coming weeks.

But when Rodgers was asked about how it feels not being linked with the Everton job, he also shared his thoughts on Benitez’s sacking.

“You know in this role, there is always gossip and speculation,” said Rodgers.

“You are always disappointed for another manager when he loses his job. Rafa and his standing in the game, the fantastic manager that he is.

“There is disappointment. We all know where we are at, in terms of results and everything else.

“Obviously, they are now on the lookout for another manager.”

It was obvious from the get-go that the Benitez appointment was never going to work and it has proven to be the case.

Everton were in a problematic situation before he arrived and he leaves them in a much worse state.

That is the fault of Benitez himself, but also those in the Everton boardroom because they have allowed this to happen.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Everton supporters don’t trust the club’s decision-makers to make the right call here and bring in a manager that can take them forward.
