“There for a reason”: Shearer praises three Newcastle players, snubs £57m Manchester United star

Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Newcastle trio Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar and Nick Pope while ignoring Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United.

The 52-year-old was writing on Twitter after naming his Premier League Team of the Season so far, which included five Newcastle players as Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron also made the cut.

Well, the Newcastle icon was questioned about his decision not to include Martinez, who has shone at Old Trafford since his £56.7m move from Ajax in July.

However, Shearer was in no mood to discuss the Argentina international, and simply justified his Newcastle-heavy backline by pointing to the amount of goals the Magpies have conceded this season.

Newcastle have shipped just 11 goals in 15 Premier League games so far this season – no side has conceded fewer – while they have also kept seven clean sheets, a feat matched only by Arsenal.

As impressive as Martinez has been, we believe Shearer was right to ignore him.

The South American has been part of a defence which has conceded 20 goals in 15 Premier League games, including an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brentford.

Newcastle have found some bargains

When you can boast significant funds like Newcastle can, it is easy to stop thinking smartly in the market, and simply go for the headline names at huge fees.

However, the likes of Pope and Trippier have shown that the Magpies are still on the lookout for shrewd deals in the market.

Newcastle paid just £10m for Pope, which was a bargain following his consistently impressive displays for Burnley over the years, which earned him international recognition with England.

In regards to Trippier, Newcastle also got their hands on another England international for a bargain sum, paying just £12m to sign him from Atlético Madrid.

For what it’s worth, Schar was also a bargain at £3m – although his arrival came during the Mike Ashley era.

If the Magpies can keep performing the way they are, Shearer’s five Newcastle inclusions will surely make their way into the official Team of the Season at the end of the campaign.
