Ousmane Dembele has released a statement regarding his situation at Barcelona, with Newcastle said to be interested in signing him.

What’s the story?

Well, Barcelona announced yesterday that their £135.5m forward must leave the Camp Nou before deadline day this month, amid interest from Newcastle (90min).

Dembele’s contract expires in June, and Barcelona have now advised him to leave after failing to agree a new deal with him for the past seven months.

The Spanish giants sounded pretty angry, and last night, Xavi told the media that the Frenchman’s absence didn’t affect the team after dropping him from the squad – ouch.

Now, however, Dembele – who earns £287,000-a-week – has shared his side of the story.

In his statement, the 24-year-old claimed that he remains fully committed to Barcelona, and said “there are negotiations” ongoing with the club which his agent will handle.

Newcastle must pay close attention to Ousmane Dembele

In our view, this situation isn’t going to be cleared up in ten days, as it’s a real mess.

Xavi and Barcelona seem to have given up on Dembele, and it sounds like he’s burned his bridges.

However, the 27-cap France international is insistent that he has done no wrong, and has always acted with the upmost professionalism.

Politics aside, the most important aspect of this story is that Barcelona have ten days to sell their club-record signing, or they are likely to lose him for nothing.

As a result, Newcastle should be paying very close attention.

It’s a tense situation in Catalonia, and even a cut-price bid from the Magpies could be enough to put an end to the saga.

By the sounds of it, Xavi would just be glad to see the back of Dembele.

Keep an eye on this situation, as there seems to be a fresh development coming out every day.
