Theo Walcott believes that Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Billy Gilmour would make sense as a signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou’s style of play means that Tottenham can expect to see technical midfielders on the wish list.

Spurs were functional in midfield under Antonio Conte but the technical demands under Postecoglou appear to be much higher.

Sitting midfielders need to get on the ball and play on the half-turn whilst linking with centre backs, inverted full backs and then into the final third.

Then we see James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski providing playmaking abilities going forward, so Spurs will be looking at technical midfielders who show outstanding control and composure.

Billy Gilmour backed for Tottenham Hotspur

One player who fits that description is Billy Gilmour.

The former Rangers talent was backed to become a superstar upon signing for Chelsea in 2017.

Gilmour struggled to break through at Chelsea and a loan move to Norwich City in 2021 really didn’t help.

Chelsea decided to sell Gilmour in 2022, allowing him to join Brighton and Hove Albion for just £9million.

Gilmour is now thriving this season and is playing regularly for the Seagulls, making 11 Premier League starts this term.

Gilmour was simply sensational for Brighton against Marseille last week and is showing the ability to dictate games in midfield.

Still only 22, Gilmour may yet have another big move in his future – and pundit Theo Walcott thinks that a move to Tottenham would make sense.

Speaking on BBC Five Live Sport (1:51:55), Walcott suggested that he could see Tottenham being the next move for Gilmour.

Walcott believes a move to a club ‘outside the top four’ makes sense, apologising to Spurs fans for highlighting them as not being a top four club.

“I could see him playing for Tottenham, I could see that sort of club to be fair, that’s why I say Tottenham, they are just outside the top four.

“But, it’s a lot of pressure on that man’s shoulders, I’m not quite sure, we just need to be patient, but I would say just outside of the top four and that’s the reason I said Tottenham – sorry Tottenham fans!” he added.

We know that former Arsenal man Walcott loves to wind up Tottenham fans, even suggesting earlier this season that fans needed to calm down about boss Postecoglou.

Tottenham may well finish in the top four this season but we think Walcott means that Gilmour taking a step to Spurs makes more sense than jumping to Liverpool or Manchester City, where expectation levels are higher.

Gilmour certainly fits the mould of what Postecoglou would seek at the base of his midfield but Brighton are now in a strong position to demand big money.

The Scot is developing by the week and interest is bound to come, with Tottenham potentially keeping tabs on his progress as they fully lean into ‘Angeball’.
