Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso dropped himself in it on Twitter yesterday. Should Manchester City or Chelsea fans be among those worried?
Footballers and Twitter are fast becoming a recipe for disaster, and Jose Mourinho will not be best pleased with his star midfielder’s lack of sharpness.
Xabi Alonso sent a message which was supposed to be private, before quickly deleting it after realising his error.
It was written in Spanish, but translates as such: “I will tell Mo to consider you and at the same time hopefully we can increase the level in the dressing room.”
Hmmm… So what does that mean?
Mo, laughably is Mourinho, although we are sure he may not like being referred to as such. It is interesting that amid rumours of dressing room unrest in Madrid, to hear it from a player himself that the club need more fresh impetus.
The most logical solution is that Alonso is trying to get one of his pals to join him at Real Madrid, but with the recipient not disclosed, who it is remains open to interpretation.
The fact the Tweet was written in Spanish should narrow the list of ‘suspects’ somewhat; so here is a look at five potential recipients.
David Silva
The Manchester City winger was coveted by Real Madrid this summer and strongly linked. He has had an underwhelming start to the season and it would be no surprise to see Madrid make another push to sign him.
Pepe Reina
Liverpool’s goalkeeper is facing a real challenge for his future at present with Brendan Rodgers unconvinced about him. He is a popular figure in the Spain squad and good mates with former pal Alonso, but he would have to play second fiddle to Casillas at the Bernabeu.
Fernando Llorente
Llorente is Europe’s most sought after striker at present given his contract is expiring next summer. He has also fallen out with Bielsa at Athletic Bilbao, and Real Madrid may want to add even more goals to their attack and give Ronaldo a focal point to feed off.
Fernando Torres
Torres has to be considered here, he is well liked among his Spain teammates, and much-wanted after his Euro 2012 performances. Up and down showings at Chelsea remain, and Alonso may well need to try and put in a good word with Mourinho to convince the manager, but a fresh start could do him good.
Jesus Navas
Another Spanish international teammate of Alonso, Navas currently plays with Sevilla. He was linked strongly with an exit this summer to Arsenal, but while his homesickness prevented talk of a switch to England from escalating, you suspect it would not stop him signing with Madrid.
