Speaking on Redmen TV, Goal journalist Neil Jones has been discussing Julian Ward’s impending departure from Liverpool.

The Reds’ Sporting Director sent shockwaves through the footballing world on Wednesday as it was reported that he’ll be leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

Ward has only held this post for a few months, and his early exit has led to one burning question – why?

Well, it has been put to Jones that Ward may just fancy a change in order to continue to grow. Michael Edwards shared that sentiment when he departed, and it’s been stated to Jones that Ward may see things in the same way after spending a quarter of his life at Liverpool.

Ward wants a change

Jones shared what he knows about Ward.

“Michael Edwards said that in his leaving statement that he’d been there for 10 years and he always believed that change is important for growth and that sort of thing,” Jones said.

“It’s important to remember that Julian and Michael Edwards were very tight. They worked together for a long time and if one was feeling that, there’s every chance the other was.

“He has a young family, he’s 41, he’s not old. The way it was put to me is that a quarter of his life has been spent at Liverpool. It’s a lot of pressure and scrutiny, demands on your time, energy and your mind. It’s important to factor those things in.”

Time for a switch

To be honest, it’s hard to blame Ward for wanting a change of scenery after a decade.

This is clearly an individual who is hugely ambitious, and at the age of 41, he’ll be keen to spread his wings and test himself elsewhere.

Whether he wants to stay in football or not remains to be seen, but after a decade at the same club, it’s not too difficult to see why he feels like he wants to switch things up and challenge himself.
