Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk was in training on Tuesday.

Liverpool take on Southampton on Friday night, and whilst there have been concerns about Virgil van Dijk’s status, fans may be able to rest easy.

The Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, with a late Toby Alderweireld own goal handing Liverpool all three points in dramatic fashion.

It was another colossal display from Van Dijk in the Liverpool defence though, especially when denying Moussa Sissoko the chance to play in Son Heung-min.

Sissoko broke through midfield and was driving towards goal alongside Son, with the Spurs pair outnumbering Van Dijk as they were bearing down on the Liverpool goal.

Van Dijk played the situation perfectly, getting his body shape exactly right as he cut off the angle to Son whilst giving himself enough time to get back across and put Sissoko off a shot, which he blazed over the bar at 1-1.

That proved crucial, but it also saw Van Dijk pick up an ankle injury in the process, which has left some worrying that he may not be back fit in time to face former club Southampton on Friday night.

However, the Dutchman was not only in training on Tuesday, but was snapped flying across goal to save a shot whilst playing as a goalkeeper; something Liverpool fans won’t have expected to see even from a fit Van Dijk.

There’s no way Van Dijk would be flying around like that if he was in real danger of missing Friday’s game, so it’s fair to say Liverpool fans should expect their talismanic defender in the line-up against Southampton.
