With the season’s end coming closer and closer, HITC Sport have been taking a look at some of the top English players for chances created in the Premier League this season; a list that features players from no teams who occupy one of the top five places.
And with only two of these players being named in the latest England squad, HITC Sport is taking a look at how the season has panned out for these chance-creating machines, and what more they might need to do to get more recognition, with all stats provide by Opta.
3. Nathan Redmond – 44 chances created
Southampton’s Nathan Redmond in action
Southampton midfielder comes in at number three after creating 44 chances so far for the Saints this season. Redmond won his first call up to Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squad, though his performances certainly deserve it. Quick, strong for his size and able to score goals from tight angles, Nathan Redmond has been allowed to play with the freedom to express himself this season, often occupying either a number 10 role or playing out on the wing. His impact for his Southampton side this season has been huge, and after the arrival of Manolo Gabbiadini, Redmond could see his assists record sky-rocket.
2. Jason Puncheon – 49 chances created
Jason Puncheon celebrates after scoring for Crystal Palace
The Crystal Palace attacking midfielder has very quietly had one of his best outings for Crystal Palace this season, despite the side’s poor form throughout most of the campaign. Creating 49 chances from 28 appearances, Puncheon’s impact and involvement when on the pitch has been excellent, and as a player with plenty of pace and goal-scoring ability, it’s a surprise to see him not getting more recognition this season. Like Redmond, Jason Puncheon can also do a job in the wide areas, and could offer England a versatile option off the bench.
1. Ross Barkley – 67 chances created
Ross Barkley celebrates scoring for Everton
The Everton midfielder’s inability to get minutes for Gareth Southgate’s England side had many of us confused, and his record of chances created in the Premier League just proves why. Topping any other English player by 18, Ross Barkley has created an impressive 69 chances from 30 appearances this season, and has really come on leaps and bounds under Ronald Koeman. With his future in doubt at Goodison Park, after stalling on signing a new contract with the club, Ross Barkley could well be a wanted man this summer, but the one manager who needs to make sure they spend more time with the Evertonian is Gareth Southgate. Could he find a way to make Dele Alli and Barkley work in the same side? Here’s hoping.
