The Top 10 most embarrassing Arsene Wenger defeats, including 5-1 Spurs hammering

After defeat in Munich, let’s revisit some other embarrassing defeats that Wenger has endured during his reign at Arsenal, including their 5-1 hammering by rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

After their latest 5-1 hammering by Bayern Munich, Arsenal fans are rightly or wrongly losing patience with manager, Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman, who has spent a massive 21 years with the London club, looks to be losing the support of a large section of Arsenal supporters, and may well be leaving the club in the summer.

But where does their latest defeat rank amongst some of Arsene Wenger’s worst ever? Here’s a look at HITC Sport’s top ten…

1. Manchester City 6-3 Arsenal – Premier League (14th December 2013)

A Fernandinho double, along with goals from Aguero, Negredo, Silva and Yaya Toure helped Manuel Pellegrini’s side hammer Arsenal in the most embarrassing of fashions four years ago.

2. Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal – Premier League (8th February 2014)

A Martin Skrtel double, as well as a brace from Raheem Sterling and a goal from Daniel Sturridge helped Liverpool record an incredible victory against Arsenal back in 2014. It marked another miserable away day for the Gunners that season.

3. Bradford City 1-1 Arsenal (3-2 on penalties) – Capital One Cup, 11th December 2012

Garry Thompson’s goal took Arsenal to penalties in the Captial One Cup game, and after a Thomas Vermaelen miss, the Gunners went out with a whimper.

5. Arsenal 0-1 Blackburn Rovers – FA Cup (16th February 2013)

A Colin Kazim Richards goal knocked Arsenal out of the fifth round of the FA Cup back in 2013, spoiling another opportunity for silverware for Arsene Wenger.

6. Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal – Premier League (22nd March 2014)

Goals from Samuel Eto’o, Andre Schurrle, Eden Hazard, Oscar and Mohammed Salah helped Chelsea hammer Arsenal 6-0 back in 2014, ruining Arsene Wenger’s 1000th match in charge. A result which left a horrible taste in Arsenal fans mouths, after being battered by their London rivals. The game also included a bizarre sending off, when Kieran Gibbs left the field after a foul by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

7. Arsenal 1-2 Birmingham City – Carling Cup Final (27th February 2011)

Goals from Nikola Zigic and Obafemi Martins ruined Arsene Wenger’s chance at another piece of silverware. The victory marked Birmingham City’s first trophy since 1963.

8. Manchester United 6-1 Arsenal – Premier League (25th February 2001)

Goals from Jermain Jenas, Aaron Lennon, Robbie Keane, Steed Malbranque and an own-goal from Nicklas Bendtner led to one of Tottenham Hotspur’s best ever victories against rivals Arsenal. The memory of this game will live long in the memory of Spurs fans, though it will want to be quickly forgotten by Arsenal supporters, especially as it came in a cup semi-final.

Possibly the worst defeat of them all, this 8-2 hammering by Manchester United was arguably Arsene Wenger’s most painful loss during his time in charge of Arsenal. Wayne Rooney marked his 150th goal for Mancester United as part of a hat-trick, adding to goals from Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck, Nani and Park Ji-Sung.
