Former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has announced his retirement from football.
As reported by the Shields Gazette, the 35-year-old centre-back will hang up his boots from the game after a 17-year career. Taylor is currently captain of New Zealand giants and A-League side Wellington Phoenix.
The London-born defender came through Newcastle’s academy before establishing himself as a key player in the first-team in the 2004/05 season. In total, Taylor made 268 appearances for the Toon over the course of an astonishing 13 years.
A fan favourite of the Gallowgate End, Taylor was part of the Newcastle squad that finished fifth in the Premier League in the 2011/12 season. The defender left Tyneside in 2016 after the Magpies were relegated down to the Championship.
Since leaving Newcastle, Taylor has had an interesting career that has taken him to some unusual footballing nations. From the Portland Timbers in America to Odisha FC in the Indian Super League, the centre-back was well travelled after departing the northeast.
Yet after 17 years of top-level football, Taylor has decided to call time on his career by going into retirement. And on social media, Newcastle supporters showed their former star defender with plenty of praise.
